Frequently Asked Questions

Why counselling when I could talk to a friend or relative?
Friends and family are a great source of support. However, there may be things you feel unable to share with them for fear of worrying or upsetting them. Counsellors are also impartial, enabling you to explore and express your true feelings without fear of judgement or offence. We are also trained to support people through psychological distress.

I will...
• listen carefully and empathically, understanding things from your point of view
• help you sort things out in a way which suits you, without telling you what to do
• give you the time and space you need to work things out, always at your own pace.

How can counselling help?

Counselling can...
  • help people experiencing stress, bereavement, depression, relational issues, health problems and trauma.
  • offer a regular space dedicated to you, with time to think and talk about your worries or difficulties.
  • help you explore your feelings in a non-judgemental environment.

What can I get out of counselling?

Although it is difficult to predict whether or not counselling will definitely help, I can give you one-to-one support that can enable you to:

• develop self awareness and insight
• cope through difficult times
• become empowered
• develop new strategies for living
• recover
• solve difficult problems

How long does a session last?

Sessions usually last for one hour but we can discuss this in your initial free session.
We can also review our work together on a regular basis.

Do I have to commit to several sessions?

I offer a free 30 minute session to see if I am the right counsellor for you. There is no obligation to commit to future sessions. People generally try a few sessions before evaluating the effectiveness of therapy.

How many sessions will I have?

I offer short and long term therapy, the number of sessions you have is up to you. We can discuss how you feel your counselling is going as part of the review process.
